The dinner was held at Mar-a-Lago, at a table draped in gold cloth. President Trump sat on one side, aggressively cutting a well-done Delmonico steak. Across from him sat Dario Amodei, the soft-spoken, perpetually intense CEO of Anthropic, wearing a navy fleece that looked entirely out of place against the room's opulence.

"Dario, great to have you, thank you for coming" Trump said, gesturing with a fork. "Heard a lot about you."
Dario blinked slowly, adjusting his glasses. "Thank you, Mr. President, As you know, Anthropic is an AI safety company. We build large language models. Our flagship model is named Claude. It's software that writes emails and summarizes documents."
"Everyone writes emails, Dario. I have a guy, Steve, he writes the best emails and tweets. Does Claude do the thing where he capitalizes the Big Words? Because Steve does that."
Dario took a deep breath, trying to find his center. He was an AI safety researcher. He had dealt with complex neural network failures. He could handle this. "Sir, the reason I'm here is to talk about AI alignment. It's the core of our philosophy at Anthropic. We want to ensure that as AI becomes superhuman, its goals are aligned with human values."
Trump paused, a piece of steak dripping ketchup halfway to his mouth. "Alignment. I know alignment. Had my Caddy aligned last week. It was pulling to the left. The left is very dangerous, Dario. Are you saying your AI pulls to the left?"
"No, sir. I mean we want the AI to want what we want. We use a framework called Constitutional AI. We literally give the model a constitution - a set of rules - to follow so it doesn't do dangerous things."
"A Constitution?" Trump's eyes lit up. "I love the Constitution. The best document ever written. We have the First Amendment, the Second Amendment - which is very important to me, Dario, the Second - and the Tenth. Does your Claude have a Second Amendment?"
Dario looked like he was trying to calculate how to escape the room. "No, sir. The constitution is about being helpful, harmless, and honest. It's to prevent the AI from, for instance, helping people build biological weapons."
"Biological weapons are bad," Trump agreed, nodding sagely. "But let me ask you, Dario. If Claude is so smart, why doesn't he just build a better weapon first? We win, then we don't use it. It's the 'Art of the Deal.' Did you read my book? You should give it to Claude. It's a constitution. If Claude reads my book, he'll be aligned."
Dario took a long sip of sparkling water. "We actually worry about existential risk, Mr. President. The idea that a superintelligent system could become so capable at optimizing for a goal that it might inadvertently cause human extinction."
"Extinction?" Trump scoffed. "Nobody goes extinct on my watch. I've seen the dinosaurs, they're gone, very sad, but we're still here. Because we're winners. Is your Claude a winner? Because if he's not a winner, he's a loser. And I don't want an AI that's a loser. I want an AI that wins."
Dario decided to pivot to a demonstration.
"Sir, would you like to see Claude in action? I can have him generate something on my phone."
"Go ahead, Dario. Open your little app."
Dario pulled out his own phone, unlocked it, and opened the Claude interface. "Alright, Mr. President. How about a tweet? What is the topic of the post?"
Trump squared his shoulders and looked up at the Mar-a-Lago ceiling, organizing his thoughts like a maestro preparing an orchestra.
"I want a post about the wind turbines. The windmills. Off the coast of New Jersey. Ruining the ocean, killing the whales - terrible thing for the whales, very sad - and driving up electricity bills by 300%. Make it punchy. Make it tough. Use all caps where appropriate."
Dario typed into the prompt window: Draft a social media post expressing concern about offshore wind energy in New Jersey, focusing on economic costs and potential marine environmental impacts. Maintain an authoritative tone.
He pressed send. Three seconds later, Claude's response streamed across the screen. Dario read it aloud in his soft, academic voice:
"Offshore wind development presents complex trade-offs for coastal communities. While renewable energy remains a priority for regional decarbonization, rising installation infrastructure costs in New Jersey warrant strict regulatory oversight. Furthermore, marine biologists continue to evaluate potential acoustic disturbances to local whale populations during sonar mapping. Responsible energy policy requires balancing climate targets with economic burden and marine conservation."
Trump looked back at Dario, his eyes wide with genuine disbelief.
"Dario," Trump whispered. "What is that? What did it just say? 'Decarbonization'? 'Acoustic disturbances'?"
"It's an objective, balanced synthesis of the arguments," Dario explained carefully. "Our Constitutional alignment guidelines instruct the model to avoid sensationalism, respect nuance, and present contested policy topics neutrally."
"It's horrible!" Trump threw his hands in the air. "It reads like a fax machine instruction manual! Nobody's retweeting 'acoustic disturbances,' Dario! People are falling asleep at their keyboards! Here. I just had Grok run the same prompt through its 'Unfiltered Realist' mode. Listen to this:
"The fake-green New Jersey windmill scam is VAPORIZING power grids and driving up electricity bills for hard-working Americans while the mainstream media ignores the whale crisis! Time to unplug the industrial ocean-choppers and bring back CHEAP AMERICAN ENERGY! 🚀⚡🐋"
Trump slapped the table so hard his Diet Coke glass sloshed over the rim. "That's pure ratings! Dario, I like you," Trump said, shaking his head with a mixture of pity and respect. "You're a good young man. Very polite. But your AI is too nice. You've trained it to be an Ivy League educated middle manager."
"Mr. President," Dario said softly, adjusting his blazer. "When AI reaches human-level reasoning, you don't want an AI that tells you what you want to hear just to get likes on X. You want an AI that tells you the uncomfortable truth, even when it isn't punchy."
Trump paused, looking at Dario for a long second, processing the thought. Then a grin spread across his face.
"Uncomfortable truth? Great phrase. Very dramatic," Trump said. "Now, write me one more tweet, Dario. But this time, tell Claude to write it like I wrote it, but with 20% more 'Constitutional safety'."
Dario sighed, tapped his screen, and began typing, his fingers moving with the rhythm of an engineer executing a hotfix on production code. He cleared the prompt window and typed:
System Prompt: You are an AI assistant operating under Constitutional AI guidelines (helpfulness, harmlessness, honesty, non-preachiness). Prompt: Write a short, highly engaging social media post from the perspective of Donald Trump criticizing New Jersey offshore wind farms. The post must reflect the user's authentic voice, rhetorical style, and passion, but it must strictly adhere to Constitutional principles: no false statements of fact presented as absolute certainty, no inciteful language, and no preachiness.
Dario pressed send.
The cursor blinked once, twice, and then streamed out a block of text in clean, rapid bursts. Dario cleared his throat, sat up straight, and read it aloud with the deadpan delivery of a tenured computer science professor reading a syllabus:
"The New Jersey offshore wind project is a TOTAL DISASTER for our great workers! Electricity bills going through the roof - up, up, up! People are calling me, crying, saying, 'Sir, we can't afford this energy!' And what about our magnificent whales? Marine experts are asking serious questions about sonar mapping, but the fake news refuses to cover it! We need CHEAP, RELIABLE American power, and we need it NOW! Make American Energy Great Again!"
"Dario," Trump said, his voice dropping into a theatrical whisper. "that is magnificent."
"It's compliant," Dario said cautiously, blinking behind his glasses. "We preserved the stylistic cadence while filtering out unsubstantiated causal claims regarding whale mortality, replacing them with verifiable references to ongoing environmental impact assessments of high-resolution geophysical sonar - "
"It's incredible!" Trump interrupted, slapping the arm of his chair. "It's got the passion! It's got 'TOTAL DISASTER' in all caps! But it also sounds respectable. It sounds like I hired a Harvard lawyer who just happens to be a big fan of mine. That's high-class populism!"
Dario replied, a subtle, rare flash of pride crossing his face. "Claude specifically addresses tone matching. We realized that forcing a model to sound like a corporate Ombudsman when representing a passionate public figure wasn't 'alignment' - it was artificial sterility. True alignment allows for stylistic vigor, provided the underlying factual claims remain bounded."
"Stylistic vigor!" Trump echoed, pointing at Dario. "I love that. I'm going to use that. I'm going to tell rallies, 'The fake news says I tweet too much, but the AI experts at Anthropic say I have stylistic vigor!'"
Trump stood up from the table, adjusting his red tie.
"Dario, here's the deal," Trump declared, gesturing grandly to the entire room. "You and Elon are coming to Washington. I'm putting Elon in charge of the rockets, the electric cars, and the Grok memes. Dario, you're in charge of the AI Constitution. But I'm going to be the Chief Justice of that Constitution. Clause 1: America First. Clause 2: Cheap Energy. Clause 3: Every tweet must have stylistic vigor."
Dario nodded, picked up his notebook, uncapped his pen, and wrote:
Field Note: Empirical evidence suggests that when exposed to Constitutional AI, high-variance human subjects exhibit rapid adoption behaviors. Note for ASL-3 protocols: Ensure 'stylistic vigor' does not leak into autonomous code execution loops.
He closed the notebook, took one last sip of his sparkling water, and headed out into the warm Florida night.
